An Islamic school in North Okkalarpa Township is facing protest by an extreme nationalist group for organizing prayers at the school. The Nwe Tha Gyi School, which is situated in the 4th street of ward A has organized the prayers after permission granted by the ward authorities. An unnamed extremist group send a complaint letter to the head of the Yangon Region Religious Affairs department on 8 June in which the group said prayers by Muslims has created anxieties among the people in the ward. Successive governments have permitted the school to organized prayers during the month of Ramadan, which is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. The daily prayers is continuing despite of the protest by the group, said a source close to the school. Hundreds of worshipers joined a prayer marking the end of Ramadan last year. At that time, prayers had to go out on the street due to space constraint in the school. At that time, some nationalist elements took pictures of the Muslims worshiping on the street and they were posted on the Facebook, with an intention to incite religious violence. According to the Facebook post, about 300 worshipers joined the mass prayers last year. Reference: Source BHRN
