A senior police officer said 7 people who organized a protest in front of the embassy of the United States in Yangon are to face charges under article 19 of the peaceful assembly act.
The head of the Yangon Western District Police Department, Police Lieutenant Colonel Kyaw Htut, said they would be charged, as they were not allow to stage the protest in front of the embassy. Although, the authorities granted permission for the protest but to stage elsewhere.
The nationalist groups staged the protest to express anger at a statement issued by the US embassy in which it was mentioned “Rohingya Community”.
The statement was issued to express sympathy with the victims of a boat incident on 19 April near Sittwe Thae Chaung area in which many people have died.
The protest in front of the embassy was staged on 28 April and it was led by Myanmar Nationalist Network, U Win Ko Ko Latt. The protestors marched in front of the embassy compound and chanted, “Whoever refer Bangalis as Rohingyas is our enemy”.
The 7 people to face charge include U Par Mauk Kha of Magwe Monastery, U Nyanna Dhamma of Nationalist monks League and a member of the group U Thusita (a.k.a) Wira Myo Satt. The three monks who are to face disciplinary actions according to the monk regulations.
While U Win Ko Ko Latt, Thet Myo Oo, Naung Taw Lay (a.k.a) Naing Win Htun, Ko Yangon (a.k.a) Nay Win Aung are to be charged under article 19 of peaceful assembly act.
The protest march was joined by about 400 extreme nationalist activists.
