A Muslim man sentenced to 2 year in prison for a trip for medical treatment

A Muslim man was sentenced to two years in prison for travelling for medical treatment. U Than Kyaw was arrested in Thandwe, where he travel from his home in Ramree Township. The both places are in the Rakhine State. He was arrested on 31 May in Thandwe for travelling from one township from another without having the citizenship identification card. U Than Kyaw leave his native village Kyauk Ni Maw in Ramree on 28 May to consult doctor for his medical condition. The Thandwe Township court sentenced him to two years imprisonment despite of his plea to the court that his parents as well as siblings are holding citizenship cards and he is yet to get one, despite of application for the citizenship ID was submitted from several months. He said Immigration Department has delayed in issuing identification card to him. In the past, under U Thein Sein Government Muslims who travel from one township to another within Rakhine State were sentenced to a minimum six months imprisonment. Reference: Source of BHRN
