A Yangon school has refused to facilitate in application of the citizenship identification cards for non-Buddhist students, said a parent of a Muslim student whose request was rejected.
“A Hindu lady who was ahead of me in the queue to submit the documents was told by an immigration officer that the school does not facilitate for the students of Hindu, Muslim religions as well as those of ethnic Chinese origin, she was told to submit the application at the ward administration office instead,” said Daw Thida Oo, mother of a Muslim student whose application was rejected.
The No. 5 State High School Tamwe has issued a notice to students on 27 January to bring all necessary documents for their citizenship ID application but they were only informed when they want to submit applications that only Buddhist students would be allowed to apply. Also came to aware of the fact that the application by Islam, Hindu, Christian students as well as mixed blood and members of Chinese ethnic origin would not be allowed to apply through the school.
