An ultra-nationalist group, the Patriotic Dhamma Network, said the recent incident in Minglar Taung Nyunt Township in Yangon was triggered due to inefficiency of the local police and authorities. The group said it was wrongly accused of triggering the incident on May 9 in Muslim majority locality near downtown Yangon, however, in fact, they were the victims in the incident, said in a media briefing organised by the Buddhist group on the incident, “Mingla Taung Nyunt is becoming a Muslim dominated area like Buthitaung and Maungtaw (In Rakhine State). For every aspect there is a law we have Burma Citizenship Law of 1982. We have immigration law. This problem arises as the authorities failed to enforce these laws. I can say this problem arises due to corrupt officials. It occurred due to incompetence of authorities, said U Pamaukkha a self-proclaimed nationalist monk from Magwe Monastery said in the media conference held at the City Star Hotel on 11 May. An apartment at the building no 105 situated at the corner of 122 street and Mya Yar Gone Street was raided at 10:30 p.m. on 9 May by a group including police, immigration and nationalist monks with the accusation that illegal immigrants were staying there. Despite of Daw Win, the owner of the apartment, and other people present there were able to produce documents the nationalist put pressure on the authorities to arrest the people present in the apartment. However, the superintendent of the township police refused to arrest them. After that tension risen between the Buddhist group led by U Thusita and some of the Muslim residents. According to so-called nationalists, Muslim started the violent. They said one in the crowd attacked U Thusita with sword. They said the monk manage to escape the attack but a police was hurt by stone threw at the monk. However, according to social media posts the violent attack was started by so-called nationalists. Muslim got agitated after they attacked two Muslim youths who were returning to their home. The troublemakers fled after Muslims chant Takveer, words from the holy Quran. The so-called nationalists were allowed to join in search of Daw Win’s home by the head of township administrator, said Ko Latt at the media briefing. Ko Latt used social media one day ahead of the incident to incite against Muslims. A local MP U Hla Shwe said the dispute was based on social issue but it was made as a racial conflict. Tin Zaw Htutt (a.k.a) Ko Latt who is a resident of 91 Street made complaint against Daw Win, saying that the latter work as a broker in trafficking of Muslims from Rakhine State. Actually, Daw Win has financial dispute with another local woman April Htun, who accompanied the so-called nationalists in the search. Daw Win later confirmed in an interview with the Radio Free Asia that she had financial dispute. April Htun, sought support Ma Ba Tha help to settle her dispute against Daw Win, who is the proprietor of Win Family Construction Company. Daw Win said Ma Ba Tha reported to the police that she involve in illegal human trafficking. However, the so-called nationalists has denied that there was financial dispute between two women. They got involved to take action against illegal trafficking of Muslims form Rakhine State to Yangon. In the same media conference, U Thusita said those who throw stone at the police station are the local residents not his followers. Also, those who shouted abusive language during the incident were also local residents. However, in the pictures circulated on social media, the nationalists were seen attacking the police station with stones and also they were seen on the cars, which roam around the ward shouting abusive language against Muslims. Khin Maung Oo, the superintendent of Minglar Taung Nyunt police has indicted 7 so-called nationalists who took part in the incident and arrest warrant was issued against them. The arrest warrants were issued against Tin Zaw Htut (a.k.a) Ko Latt, Ma Aung Aung Myint (a.k.a) Ma Aung (spouse of Ko Latt), Tin Lin Hteik (a.k.a) Lin Lin, Tin Htay Aung (a.k.a) Ah Kyi Kaung, Myat Phone Mho as well as two monks U Thusita and U Pyinna Wuntha.
