This report is Confirmed true and is of Medium Priority. Here is why -
The 4 September issue of the San Taw Chein newspaper published an excerpt from Kulama Thuthan sermons book, in which it mention Kulama (a derogatory reference to a female of South Asian origin and Muslim). The word attracted criticism from the Patriotic Monks League, which called it an insult to the religion. A monk from the league wrote in social media post that the newspaper must take responsibility on that reference. Wira Myo Set wrote in his Facebook post “how San Taw Chien would take responsibility on making reference to a sermon of Lord Buddha, with a name associated with the international terrorism”. The league members went to the newspaper office on 6 September and demanded the newspaper’s board of editors to resolve the matter. The monks said the excerpt from the sermon gave a wrong impression to the readers and made it laughing stocks due to its reference to Kulama. The editor of the newspaper explained that the sermon was neither preached by Lord Buddha himself or any other monks of his time. The book was about a sermon preached by a monk U Kuthi La to a young Kulama. U Htay Aung explained that the name of the book was given by the monk himself. However, the monks from the league threatened the newspaper that it could faces charges under insult of religion, which carry maximum 2 years imprisonment.
