Here is why -
A group of monks from the Protection of Race and Religion committee (Ma Ba Tha) has objected hotel bellhops wearing the costume designed similar to the dress of the Myanmar heroes during Bagan era.
The monks protested after pictures of a porter of Yangon’s Sedona hotel was posted on the social media Facebook. The monks went to the hotel on 26 May to lodge their protest with the hotel management.
The Ma Ba Tha Central has sent a letter of protest to the Ministers of Religious and Cultural Affairs as well as to the Hotels and Tourism.
The letter said it was inappropriate for the bellhops whose ranks are as low as of a porter or an office boy to wear the costume similar to that of Myanmar heroes. It said the porters has to do low grade jobs, as they have to carry language of the guests, which may include women sarongs.
It said the hotel management asked its bellhops, who are the lowest rank in a hotel, to wear the costume used by Myanmar heroes like Kyansit Tha with an intention to degrade Myanmar as the British did during their colonial rule of Myanmar.
The letter called the hotel management to prescribe a dress code that is not harmful to the national prestige of Myanmar.
The hotel management said the bellhops are asked to wear Bagan costume so that foreigners who love Myanmar culture could take pictures with them and the dresses were made to display at the Myanmar Traditional Costume fair, which was held at the hotel on 18 May.
After the protest from Ma Ba Tha, the hotel management asked it staff not to wear the costumes.
