A jailed interfaith activist Zaw Zaw Latt said even though he and his colleagues were working for promotion of peace but he been subjected to imprisonment as he belong to a minority faith.
He was speaking after a hearing on a charge against him under unlawful association act at Mandalay’s Chan Myae Thar Zan court.
“I am a decedent of a Bama race. I am a grandson of a commander Shwe Hlan Bo who served under a Burmese king. Some people criticized us, they says because we are Muslims were doing such unlawful acts, it is a motive to send us into the jail,” Zaw Zaw Latt said.
Pwint Phyu Latt a co accused with Zaw Latt said even though many members of the interfaith youth group want on a peace mission only her, Zaw Zaw Latt and the other one person were arrested. The group leaders have not face any persecution.
“Those who advocate for peace went in a group with the same intention. We went to conflict affected area to raise a flag of peace. Among those who joined the group, only two of us who are Muslims are being prosecuted,” Pwint Pyhu Latt said.
Zaw Zaw Latt and Pwint Phyu Latt and Zaw Win Bo each were sentenced to 2 years imprisonment with hard labor on 26 February after a picture of the three holding a firearm, which was taken during their trip to Laiza in Kachin State in 2013, was posted on the social media Facebook. They also faced charges on illegal border crossing following their trip to Mizoram near India-Myanmar border.
The sentence against the three was criticized as adopting double standard by judicial authorities after a son of a former military general was given much lighter sentence for a more serious offense.
A court in Yangon sentenced on 3 March U Aung Aung Oo (a.k.a) Ko Aung a son of General Kyaw Ba one month prison sentence and Kyat 500 000 penalty and if he could not pay penalty to serve additional six months in prison.
