Muslim journalist couple charged

A Muslim journalist Zaw Myo Oo and his wife Thuriya San San Aye were arrested from their home in Labutta Township in Ayeyarwady Region on 15 August. They were charged under the section 66 D of the electronic and telecommunication law. The police superintendent Tin Maung Htwe said they were arrested after a leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) U Shwe Ko Ko complained that the Facebook page of the couple has carried defamatory message against the party. The officer said the Facebook page of the couple Zaw Myo Stephan reportedly carried defamatory messages in September 2015 against the members of Be Tut Station NLD members Zaw Myo Oo said when he was running tuition for matriculation students he was accused by some as persuading children to convert to Islam. Also alleged that he asked his student to answer in Urdu, like instead of “yes” “ji” in Urdu. Some residents made remark that it was strange that the two were targeted while there are many who are writing critical comments on the Facebook. The couple’s two kids were taken care by the neighbors for some time and now their relatives from Myaung Mya came to take care of the kids. A journalist from Myaung Mya, Ko Pho Zaw said he was not allow to meet Zaw Myo Oo and his wife after they were arrested. The case will be heard at Kan Bat court under the section 66 D of telecommunication and electronic law. And they are held under the remand issued by the judge at Lubutta court. Reference: BHRN
