A group of monks seized the camera of a photojournalist while he was covering a news event at Sedona Hotel in Yangon on 26 May. The camera of the photojournalist, who work for Myanmar Cable News (MCN), was seized by the monks who were at the hotel to investigate on what they called inappropriate costume wear by some staff of the hotel. The monk used abusive language against the journalist. A trainee photojournalist Ko Nay Min Kha was invited by the Sedona Hotel management and the incident took place while he was waiting to interview the hotel management. The monk recorded video of the other journalists, with their phone, when journalists took video of the monks entering into the hotel. The monks asked the journalists to produce their identification card. When Ko Nay min Kha was asked to produce his ID card he could not and he explained to the monks that his card was not ready since he started working as a journalist only three months back and he is still on a temporary contract with his news agency. The monks told him he could not take picture if he has no ID card and a civilian accompanied with the monks snatched his camera. At that time, the all eight monks in the hotel asked the journalists to delete their video files, Ko Nay Min Kha said abusive words were used against him and other journalists. He told the monks to call his news agency to confirm on his assignment. Then the monks backed off, he said. His news agency said it would seek protection for the journalist under the citizens’ rights and journalists’ rights.
