A Muslim vendor who open a stall near Shwedagon Pagoda was beaten up and his merchandise seized by a group of monks who are the member of the Patriotic Monks Union on 17 April. Ko Than Naing Oo was first told not to open his stall by monk U Thusita a.k.a Wira Myoset and his four followers. The incident took place at the eastern wing of the pagoda, which is crowded with devotees on the traditional Myanmar New Year Day. The Muslim vendor was later taken into Benglar Monastery and beaten up by monks and merchandise he was selling were seized. “They asked me if I was not aware that Muslim vendors were banned near the pagoda I said I was not as there is no sign saying so. Then they ask didn’t other vendors told me about that I said no. Then one of them slapped me two or three times,” Ko Than Naing Oo said. “Then they seized eye glasses I was selling and told me to bring recommendation letters from my ward administration and imam from my mosque. They also said I would need to sign an undertaking that I would not open stall near pagoda and Buddhist monasteries in future if I want to reclaim my properties,” Ko Than Naing Oo, a widowed and the father of three young children said. He said when he went to police station the police refused to register a case as they need permission from the Religious Affairs Department before open a case against monks. Similarly, on the last Myanmar New Year Day U Thusita led in arresting 3 Muslim vendors for opening their stalls near Shwedagon pagoda. At that time Ye Ko Ko a vendor of wrist belt was kicked by U Thusita and his merchandise worth Kyat 450 000 were seized. They also seized mobile phones and accessories worth about kyat 1 million was seized from another Muslim vendor and also cooking utensils from a saffron rice food stall. The Muslims are also banned from other pagodas including Moegaung, South Okkalapa, and Mae La Mu pagodas. Even though these incidents are clear breach of individual rights of the citizens, however the authorities failed to take actions against the perpetrators. In this year incident, as well the police failed to take action however, it help in return of eyeglasses to Ko Than Naing Oo. Reference DVB /BHRN
