A Rohingya woman in Sittwe is facing fire negligence charges after fire started at her home on 3 May in which one other house was caught fire. The incident coincided with arrival to the town by ultra-nationalist monk U Wirathu. According to Fire Brigade of Sittwe the fire started on evening 9 p.m. from a solar panel. It said two houses were burned and properties worth kyat 100 000 were destroyed. While the fire was raging, rumours were spread on social media that the house was torched in Muslim- Buddhist riot. A villager elder U Hla Shwe refuted the rumours he said, “The fire started after solar panel got heated. Not because of racial or religious incident”. Daw Nushul Bahar, 60, daughter of U Muslim, who is the owner of the house, where the fire started was arrested and charged for negligence. She is charged under the section285 of Penal Code, which carries maximum 3 years imprisonment together with fine. During 2012 sectarian violence, the government said Muslims burn down their homes by themselves. In addition, it said recent series of murders in Maungtaw are because Muslims killing each other.
