Mosque raided by monks in Mandalay region

A mosque in Yinmar Bin village in Mandalay region was raided by a group of monks on 23 April. They came into the mosque to check if a shed in the mosque compound was built with official permission. After the raid, the authorities asked the trustees of the mosque to sign an undertaking saying that they would dismantle the shed. The monks later posted the pictures of their raid on the mosque on the social media. Since the raid, the trustees of the mosque said they were scared to allow guests to stay overnight in the mosque. The raid was carried out by 2 monks led by Taung Thar Lay monk from Meiktila and a group of laymen. They went into the inner part of the mosque up to the stage where Imam deliver preacher. Local Muslims have criticized monks for entering into mosque without permission from the authorities. A Yangon resident, U Haroon who recently visited the mosque said, “I saw a shed inside the mosque compound I heard it is now demolished. I learn when I was there that it was not a new construction just refurbish the existing one”. The mosque has a well which produce bitter taste water which people believe could treat diabetes disease. Among those who come to fetch water are Buddhists. After the raid, the trustees are scared to allow the people come to fetch water. Ko Kyaw Win from Pathein who went to Yin Mar Bin to fetch water from the mosque said he was not allow to stay overnight at the mosque. “I was told to find a place to live as they are concerned after the raid that the monks might come back if they see many people gathered in the mosque. I went there to drink bitter water and to have bath with it,” he said. Reference: BHRN
