The Kangyi Daung court on 28 March has sentenced a leader of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) U Than Aung six months rigorous imprisonment under the Electronic Communication Act article 66 (D). He was put on trial for featuring a doctored obscene picture of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on his Facebook page. U Than Htun was sued by a political activist Si Thu Aung after his Facebook page with the name of Thu Thu featured the picture of the NLD leader last September. The trial began on 17 October and the judgement was delivered at the 16th hearing of the case. In similar cases a woman and man, Ma Chaw Sandi Htun and U Patrick Khun Ja Li were given 6 months sentences under the same electronic act in for mocking the Commander in Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on the Facebook. The Electronic Act was adopted in 2004, during the reign of the State Peace and Development Council. The article 34 of the law said Whoever commits, creating, modifying or altering of information or distributing of information created, modified or altered by electronic technology to be detrimental to the interest of or to lower the dignity of any organization or any person, on conviction be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 5 years or with fine or with both.
