Here is why -
A court in Mandalay has sentenced three members of an interfaith dialogue committee two years rigorous imprisonment after they were found guilty under immigration act for illegal border crossing.
Ko Zaw Zaw Latt, Ko Zaw Win Bo and Ma Pwint Phyu Latt were sentenced by Chan Aye Thar San township court on 26 February.
The three, together with other four interfaith activists, including a monk, went to India’s Mizoram State during 14 to 16 April 2015, but only the three were arrested and charged under the immigration act.
They were arrested last June and charged with having contact with illegal organizations and under Immigration Emergency Provisions Act 13(1).
Ko Zaw Zaw Latt and Ma Pwint Phyu Latt also have to face a separate charge for participation in a peace march to Laiza, the headquarters of Kachin Independence Army (KIA). The pair will face a charge under the illegal association act 17(1) from 13 March.
“This is unfair judgement; this law is only to prevent foreigners entering illegally into Myanmar. Even Chinese nationals who enter into the country illegally and received six years jail terms were released only after serving 8 days in jail,” Ko Zaw Zaw Latt said.
Ko Zaw Zaw Latt during his peace march to Laiza met with the members of Kachin Independence Organization [the armed wing of KIA]. He was arrested after a picture of him holding a rifle, which was taken during the trip, was posted on his Facebook page.
The interfaith dialogue committee was established in the aftermath of communal violence in Meiktila in March 2013. A monk led the group, whose members also include people of Islamic and Hinduism faiths.
