Here is why -
The National Human Rights Commission has recommended to take actions against those who involved in arson attacks on a squatters village in Kyeikhto Township. The commission also called for transparency in reallocation of land to the squatters evicted from their homes.
The authorities tried to forcibly remove squatters in the two villages in Theinzayat village tract in Kyeikhto Township – Dawit Kwin and Dawit Kwin- in late 2015. The move triggered scuffles between the residents of the two villages and the authorities.
A group of 70 officials, who raided the two villages, included members of the police force and officials of the General Administration Department. According to the HR commission, they terrorized the women and children. Also threatening with arms and fired guns in the air.
The human rights commission recommended the Mon State Government to conduct with transparency in reallocation of land to the squatters and to put on trial those who perpetrated the violent attacks against the villagers.
