Political activist facing harassment by authorities with trumped up charges

A Muslim man who supported student protest calling for the end of Myitsone dam project was arrested by the Special Brunch of Police in November 2015. He has been under investigation initially with 50 charges but he was not found guilty on any of the charges, but he is facing additional numbers of charges. U Maung Maung Than who is still under arrest said “I was investigated by the Special Brunch of police as well as by Bureau of Special Investigation with allegation of providing financial support to the group opposed to the government but none of the charges were proved against me, so they have reopen a family case against me with the instruction from the Chief of Yangon Region Police and I am facing trial inside the Insein Prison for that case”. He is currently on trial under Electronic Act section 66 (D). The charges were brought against him by his wife base on Viber messages he sent to her. In a request sent by the police to a technical company to assess the message in the phone, it was mentioned that U Mang Maung Than’s was a Muslim. The requests were also sought from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Communication and Information Technology to proceed with the case against U Maung Maung Than. A former political prisoner Ko Moe Thu said “it is true that he provided financial support to the politicians, but that is not to oppose the government” Political activists said the actions against U Maung Maung Than was aimed at intimidating the political activists. A former political prisoner U Ba Myint said “He is arrested and farmed many cases so that he can be found guilty in one or the other case. It is very worrying for politicians across the country”. Many political activists are facing retribution from the authorities with currently 90 people are jailed and 400 people are facing trials.
