Here is why -
A district court in Mandalay has rejected appeals by the two inter-faith activists against the prison sentences.
The two Mandalay-based activists U Zaw Zaw Latt and Daw Pwint Phyu Latt have lodged appeal against the three years imprisonments handed down on them by the Chan Myaw Tha Zan township court in April.
The district court in its verdict announced on 4 July upheld the judgement of the lower court.
They were sent to jail after the court found them guilty under the section 17(1) of unlawful association acts for making a visit to the headquarters of an Ethnic Armed Group Kachin Independence Army (KIA).
U Kyaw Kyaw, the Information and Communication Officer at the district court said the appeal was rejected as the court found the testimonies against the two were found to be sufficient for their conviction.
The families of the convicted duo said they would continue appeal at the higher courts up to the nation’s Supreme Court.
In a separate case, U Zaw Zaw Latt and Daw Pwint Phyu Latt were sentenced to 2 years imprisonment after they were found guilty of violating the section 13/1 of the Immigration Act for making a cross border visit to an Indian State of Mizoram. The verdict on the first case was announced on 26 February.
