Here is why -
A Muslim man, Maulvi Salim, is facing charges of doing an obscene act with a Buddhist girl. He was produced to the court in Myanaung Township in Ayeyarwady Region on 27 June. About 200 supporters of Ma Ba Tha joined the first day of the trial.
Maulvi Salim was arrested on 16 June in Inpin Station in Myanaung Township after he allegedly showed his private part to a 9th grade student. He is facing two charges, obscene act and insult to modesty of a woman. The first day of trial was postponed after a group of 200 supporter of Ma Ba Tha gathered in the court.
According to an eyewitness, the crowd showed displeasure with the court’s decision to postpone the hearing. They dispersed only after the court authorities tried to convince that the trial would be resumed on 4 July.
Reporting on the incident, Kyaw Phone Myint (Rakhita Phone Myint) wrote on his Facebook page on 27 June that “today 500 people who wished to see justice done in this case attended the court hearing. They have also surrounded the police station, as justice was not done in this case. We urge (the court) to pass the judgement as soon as possible. Our strength will be doubled at the next court hearing”.
In his earlier post, Kyaw Phone Myint said Maulvi Salim has no citizenship card and part of his home is built on the road.
Kyaw Phone Myint has been writing post frequently on the Facebook to encourage the supporters of Ma Ba Tha in Myanaung and Inbin station to give their support in the trial of Maulvi Salim.
