This report is Confirmed true and is of High Priority. Here is why -
The parliament rejected on 20 April, a proposal by Daw Khin Saw Wai, a member of parliament from Rathedaung to relaunch verification process on the citizenship status of Muslim people in Rakhine State. She said verification of the citizenship status by using the 1982 Citizenship Law was necessary as the number of what she called “Bengali” population in the Rakhine State was on the rise. The proposal was put on vote in the parliament and it received 154 vote in favor and 228 against and seven MP abstained. The parliament speaker decided not to approve it, just to be noted in the parliamentary records. Daw Khin Saw Wai said to do vetting on citizenship was required as only 25 per cent of population in Rakhine State hold citizenship card, the rest were not holding any citizenship registration card, also as in Maungdaw and Buthidaung where 97 per cent of population are Bengali and only the remaining 3 per cent are Rakhine. She said redoing verification according to the 1982 Citizenship law would give a clearer picture of citizenship status in Rakhine State. Daw Khin Saw Wai said a similar proposal submitted to the parliament under the previous government was also rejected. And she advice the authorities to increase security when they visit to the Muslim communities to do vetting as in the past authorities doing a similar work were attacked. Daw Khin Saw Wai said there is no possibility of attack if rule of law is prevailed and she discussed the matter with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
