Here is why -
A major TV station broadcast this as part of their prime time news (Sinhala): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCmfkW8RFyE&t=46s. Since then it has been widely dispelled stating that it is a natural rock formation, appeared as a result of the outer layer of the rock peeling off.
