Five members of a Muslim family were charged with assault and theft in Kan Chaung village in Myaung Mya Township in Ayeyarwady Region. U Soe Naing, who is an ex-administrator of the village, has filed a police complaint alleging that he was beaten up by the five family members on 23 May. An eyewitness, U Win Myint, said an altercation broke out between U Soe Naing and U Shafi, after U Soe Naing, who was drunk on that day has first attacked U Shafi by saying “I will kill all Kulars (a derogatory term used in Myanmar against Muslims and people of South Asian origins) and kill this one (U Shafi) first”. U Win Myint said U Shafi’s son Ko Thet Naing Win has intervened to stop the argument and send-off U Soe Naing to his home. In his police complaint, U Soe Naing alleged that his gold ring and cash Kyat 600 000 were lost during altercation with U Shafi. He said he was beaten up and threatened with abusive language by a group of Kulars. The police accepted his complaint despite of it includes racial slurs. The police filed case against U Shafi, Ma The The, Nur Jan Bi, Ko Thet Naing Oo and Ma Cherry Zaw under the sections 384/323/427/114/294 of the Penal Code. Only Ma Charry Zaw, 23, daughter of U Mohamed Hussein is so far being arrested. “My daughter- in- law is carrying four months pregnancy, and she has less than two years old child left behind at home. She was not present at the time of the incident. She is under arrest now. The rest have fled,” U Myint Lwin said about Ma Cherry Zaw. Myaung Mya police has tried to arrest the remaining four accused in the case including U Shafi but according to the police on 29 May, they were still at large. About 200 Muslim households live in Kan Chaung village and it has one mosque and one Arabic school. Reference Source of BHRN
