Here is why -
A social media post, which was shared by many people, says a poster calling for ban of members of minority religion was found inside a monastery compound in Shwe Nyaung Township in Southern Shan State. Shwe Nyaung is situated at 12 mile west of the state capital, Taunggyi.
The post said the poster read as “ Members of minority religions (Islam, Christian, Hindu and any other religions) are not allow to live in Minglar Ward of Shwe Nyaung , Taunggyi Township, only Buddhist are allow and members of the minority religions are never to be allow to reside here”.
There is no ward in Shwe Nyaung with the name of Minglar only “Minglar Aung Myay” ward is exists. In that ward, there is only one monastery, which is called “Dhakhina Yama” monastery and the monk of that monastery U Zin Thone is known to be living in unity with members of minority religions.
According to the local sources, the picture in the post is not from the monastery and they are not aware of the location shown in the photo. They assume that it could be an attempt to incite religious violence coinciding with the new government taking up the office.
However, in previous occasions anti-Muslim pamphlets were distributed in Shwe Nyaung, which faced religious incitement as many other towns in Myanmar. A group of motorcyclists roamed around the town during congregation of 969 movement but none of them were from the town itself.
In Shwe Nyaung one mosque exist and according to the census 1260 Muslims live in the town.
