Here is why -
The Patriotic Defence Force was renamed as the National Unity Force at a meeting of the officers from the force in Nay Pyi Taw on 6 March.
The policy of the force is also changed from its original aim to be an auxiliary force for the Tatmadaw, but now it has been changed to be a conduit for those who want to join the Myanmar military, Ko Kyaw Nanda (Thakhin Khat Htan) an activist from 969 movement said.
Ko Zaw Zaw Latt, who has been trying to recruit for the Patriotic Defence Force, said before the Nay Pyi Taw meeting that he was planning to discuss with the military Commander-in-Chief to seek support for the force.
There were speculation about formation of Patriotic Defence Force after the Commander-in-Chief was seen in a group photos with civilians, which were taken at a farewell dinner hosted in honor of the outgoing President U Thein Sein. However, the military denied such reports.
About 50 people from the Protection and Race and Religion Committee have attended the 6 March meeting in Nay Pyi Taw.
