This report is Confirmed true and is of Medium Priority. Here is why -
A temporary school shed built in Meiktila to use for summer classes for Islamic studies was ordered to demolish by authorities on 12 March. The order came after the authorities accused that the building was not being constructed as per permission. The school in Nan Taw Kone ward was built with the permission from the ward administration chairman U San Htun. The permission was granted on 8 March to build a temporary shed to use as a school. U Aung Htay and U Htay Lwin (a.k.a) Gafoor took lead in building the school at a vacant land in the ward While the shed was under construction, a group of ultra-nationalists complained to the authorities that concrete building is being built instead of a shed as approved. Following the complaint, the ward administration ordered to halt building of the shed. “The intention of the building shed was to teach religious studies during summer holidays. We send our kids to mosques. Even though there are mosques in Nantaw Kone, Chan Aye and Tharyar Kone, but Chan Aye Kone ward has 800 Muslim households and there are estimated 1000 children live there. Now as the shed was demolished children will have to do studies at sheds built in some houses,” said Ko Arkar, a resident of Tharyar Kone ward. In current circumstances, children have to do their studies in small sheds built attached with the houses in Nan Taw Kone, Chan Aye Tharyar, Yan Myo Aung and Wun Zin wards. A parent of a student from Chan Aye ward said as 600 students are spread out in the different places more teacher are needed and teaching was not efficient. During sectarian violence in Meiktila in 2013, more than 4000 Muslims were displaced. The town has strong influence of Ma Ba Tha and it has many types of schools for Buddhist students in monasteries, government schools and technical college. However, even four years after the incident six mosques are still shut off and one Islamic school in Mingla Day Yone ward is also not allow to reopen.
