Counter demonstration against Ma Ba Tha in Yangon

A counter demonstration against a protest march by an ultra-nationalist group, over the appointment of foreigners in the Rakhine Advisory Commission, took place in Yangon on 11 September. The Myanmar Nationalist Network staged a protest against the appointment of a former United Nations Secretary General Mr Kofi Annan and two other foreigners in the commission, which was established by the State Counsellor Office in late August. The commission’s mandate includes advising the government recommendations on how to address the racial tension in Rohingya State. The protesters marched to the Bo Sein Hman stadium in Bahan Township, where the local residents gathered to stage a counter protest. According to an eyewitness, a scuffle broke out between the two sides after the local residents protested against a speech made by two prominent members of the network, Win Ko Ko Latt and Naung Taw Lay. One photojournalist from Myanmar photo agency was attacked during in the scuffle. And the two other journalists were barred from covering the event. The photojournalist hold an media briefing at the office of the Myanmar Journalist Network on 12 September and he has filed a lawsuit against his the attackers at the Bahan Township court. During the speeches in the event, the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region Dr Zaw Myint Maung was criticized for his comment earlier against playing a pro-Bamar song Zartiman in the schools. He said the song advocate for discrimination against the members of the minority ethnic groups in Myanmar. Win Ko Ko Latt and Naung Taw Lay are the leaders of the network who also organized similar protest against Rohingya minorities. Reference: Source of BHRN and /7 Days News
