Here is why -
A complaint against a prominent anti- Muslim monk, U Wira Thu, was filed with the police in Yangon on 11 July for his alleged verbal abuse against the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in Myanmar Ms Yang Hee-Lee.
The complaint was filed by U Win Aung, the head of a Nay Pyi Taw-based charity group “Local Lifeguard”.
In the complaint, U Win Aung said the monk had committed abuse against the UN envoy by calling her a “whore” in his address to a public rally in Yangon in January 2015.
The police has accepted the complaint against the powerful monk, who lead the Association on the Protection Race and Religion - more widely known with its Myanmar acronym Ma Ba Tha. The group advocate for social boycott against the Muslims in Myanmar.
But the police said it need endorsement from the Monk Supervisory Committee before pressing ahead with the charges against U Wira Thu.
The Director at the Monk Supervisory Committee said it so far has not received any complaint from the police against the monk.
