This report is Confirmed true and is of Medium Priority. Here is why -
The activists from Myanma Race Protection Youth Organization (MRPYO) has been spreading messages critical to the work of a prominent human rights lawyer, U Robert San Aung. The messages accused the lawyer of representing for Muslims who were arrested for breaking law during the communal violence. Also accused him of helping for the release of Muslims who committed the crime and for taking assistance from the overseas Islamic organizations. In reality, U Robert San Aung has been representing for the human rights and political activists as well as for the journalists who face harassment by the authorities. He abstain from taking his lawyer fees in such cases. The MRPYO also accused Robert San Aung of embezzlement of the funds, which are meant for the political prisoners given by the international donors through the Association for Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP), of which Robert San Aung is a member. It has created a bad reputation for the AAPP, MRPYO said. He also came under criticism for alleged embezzlement of fund from the Islamic organizations, which made even his family to upset with the lawyer. The extreme nationalist organization said Robert San Aung together with other lawyer, U Ko Ni, are financially very sound and they are influential with the foreign actors and have a good relationship with the National League for Democracy (NLD). Due to these reasons, the judiciary system under the new government would be controlled by Kula (a derogatory used in Myanmar against Muslim and south Asian decedents) as the two were described. Robert San Aung from his part said, “My mother told me not to represent for those who are indicted for sexual exploitation, embezzlement, physical abuse against other. She also told me not to implicate with religious intolerance, if you implicate with religious matters, you will face brutal death as Hitler had to face”. Robert San Aung is a recipient of the Martin Ennals award given to him by the Amnesty International. Even though he is facing threat and intimidation from the authorities, he never back track from standing on the side of the victims of human rights abuse. Unlike he is portray by the extreme nationalist elements, Robert San Aung is standing not only on the side of Muslims
