Here is why -
SECERAL people in Tarmoe Nye in Northern Shan State were issued with the citizenship identification cards with their ethnicity mentioned as Mon Wun (Chinese) and the religion as Mone Wun (Buddhist).
But in an instruction issued on 10 March by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Immigration and Manpower say their ethnicity identification should be changed to (Mone Wun) Barma.
The instruction was in response to a request by (Mone Wun) Bamar Cultural Group made in a letter to the President Thein Sein sent on 9 March. The letter says the change of their ethnic name was promised by the State Peace and Development Council (SDPC) military government.
Originally the name of the ethnic group was known as Mone Won, but the former junta chief Senior General Than Shwe told to change it from Mone Wun Chinese to Mone Wun Burma.
After the junta head’s remark, the citizenship IDs issued since 2009 have mentioned Mone Wun Burma instead of Mone Wun Chinese.
But in 2014 national census there was no record of Mone Wun Burma living in Myanmar.
