Here is why -
On 28th May, Buddhist mobs led by member of MaBaTha surrounded a mosque in
Myan Aung City. The mobs were carrying Machete and threatened to attack the
mosque. There were 73 Muslims from nearby cities staying for a night at the mosque
to attend an award-giving event on 29th May. The event has been doing annually to
reward the students for the academic achievements since 15 years after completing
exams. Although the mosque authorities were informed the local authority about the
stay and granted the permission but due to the objection of the local Buddhist
extremists the guests have to evacuate immediately. Before the mob turned up, a
rumour has spread that about 300 Muslim were gathering in the mosque that
inflamed the local Buddhist.
A witness said, “The mob turn up with machetes and the crowd become larger. It was
about 12:30 am. The authority suggested us to comply with the demand of the mobs,
thus we have to cancel the event and asked the Muslim to evacuate immediately
from the mosque.” According to the witness, a member of USDP party, Wa Gyi, lead
the mob including the member of MaBaTha.
