Here is why -
The Rakhine State regional legislature has adopted a resolution based on a proposal submitted by a representative to continue to use Bengali in referring to the state’s Muslim population.
The proposal submitted by the representative from Buthidaung Htun Aung Thein in which he called the Union Government to continue with the original usage of Bengali.
U Htun Aung Thein said in his proposal that Bengali issue is still unresolved and while process of issuing the citizenship identification card in ongoing Muslims are working for getting recognition for Rohnigya.
He said there are protests across Myanmar to claim that there are no Rohingya in Myanmar. And it is not an appropriate time to start referring to them as Muslim community from Rakhine State or people of Islamic faith from Rakhine State. He said by using that term it would pose hindrance in the citizenship verification process.
The consent of the local government on the proposal was taken before it was submitted to the regional legislature.
