A leading monk of the Race and Religion Protection Committee (Ma Ba Tha) has criticized the State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for neglecting the national security. He said after Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s joint media conference with visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry on 22 May. During the media conference, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said Myanmar was facing more important problems than Rohingya issue. U Wirathu said controversial Rohingya issue is the most important problem of Myanmar and he could not understand what was the rationale behind Daw Aung San Suu Kyi making such a statement. He said the new government is only working for the development of the country, but instead it should focus on the national security, as it is the key issue for any country. Ma Ba Tha and other extremist nationalist groups have staged a series of protest in some township across Myanmar against a media statement issued by the US embassy, which mentioned the Muslim victims of a boat incident in Rakhine State as Rohingyas.
