Here is why -
A meeting of the Committee on Shan State Unity (CSSU)which has started in Yangon’s Mi Casa hotel today (3 March) was cancelled after authorities refused to give permission, said a member of Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), which is the leading organizer for the event.
U Sai Lait, a spokesperson of the SNLD said the summit was originally planned from 3 to 5 March but it was cancelled after authorities told to stop the meeting on its first day.
“A group of military intelligence officers and other relevant authorities asked permission to enter into the meeting room, but since it is our internal meeting we did not allow them in. They left and told us to seek permission if we want to continue the meeting on the next day.” U Sai Lait said.
The organizer for the CSSU event went to Yangon Northern district administration office to apply for permission, but the authorities declined, as they needed a letter of endorsement from the police and other documents.
“The time we arrived to the office was around 6 p.m. so we could not get required endorsement letters,” U Sai Lait said.
The Mi Casa Hotel said it could not host the meeting without a written permission from the authorities.
The current CSSU meeting was fifth time the committee met and it was supposed to discuss on peace process as well as matters related to implementation of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) as well as on reorganizing of the central executive committee of the CSSU.
The meeting was attended by U Khun Htun Oo, the chair of SNLD, General Sai Htin, who is the head of Shan State Progressive Party (SSPP), Lieutenant General Yward Serk of Restoration Council for Shat State as well as General Kai Pha from Sai Kyaw People Militia and U Khun Sai, Director of Pyidaungsu Institute, which is helping with the peace process.
