Here is why -
The authorities have charged six leaders of a mob that vandalized a mosque near Phakhant town in Kachin State on 1 July. According to an eyewitness, about 200 people were involved in the attack in which the mosque was completely demolished.
The Police in Lone Khin village, where the mosque stood, has charged the six under the section 436/114 of the criminal procedure code.
The superintendent of the Phakhant Police Station, Inspector Myint Htwe, will act as complainant in the case.
According to local residents, the security forces are still guarding the site of the mosque even nearly one month after the attack took place.
The mosque destruction was the second similar incident in Myanmar after the new government came to power. However, the authorities are still failing to take action against the perpetrators of the religious violence.
