This report is Confirmed true and is of High Priority. Here is why -
A Muslim street vendor was threatened by a group of six monks for opening his stall near the eastern entrance of Shwedagon Pagoda on 17 April. Ye Ko Ko was beaten up by the monks and waist belts he was selling were looted. The merchandise reportedly worth about Kyat 400 000. On the same day, which was traditional Myanmar New Year day, a similar incident involving monks and street vendors were reported. A Buddhist and a Muslim man said their mobile phone shop was looted by a group of 10 monks and unspecified numbers of mobile phones worth about Kyat 1 million were looted. Similarly, a Muslim family who was selling saffron rice near the Happy World Amusement park were also threatened by monks to close their shop and their utensils were confiscated. The monks told the family to bring certificates from the police, mosque and the ward administration authorities if they wanted to reclaim their property. The people affected by these acts were belong to lower middle class and the police could not act so far as it say they were not cognizable offense. The police, however, promised to put forward these cases to Ministry of Religious Affairs. The street vendors brought letters of endorsement as asked by monks. When contacted to person who maintain a Facebook Page Wira Myosat, he declined to comment on these cases. In similar incidents last year, Muslim street vendors who open their stalls near Shwedagon, Moegaung, South Okkalarpa, Maelamu pagodas had faced intimidation by monks.
