Here is why -
A candidate for the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) is approved by the Union Election Commission, despite complaint to disqualify him for his parent being non‐citizen.
The complaint said the parents of U Thein Nyunt, who currently serving as a minister at the President Office were not citizens at the time of his birth.
The commission has rejected the candidatures of 88 Muslim candidates on the basis of their parents were non‐citizens at their time of their birth. An NLD candidate for Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House of Parliament) U Soe Win has submitted an objection in which he said U Thein Nyunt, also a former defence minister U Thein Nyunt was born from non‐citizen parents. However, the election commission which is form with former USDP members ignored the complaint and upheld U Thein Nyunt as candidate.
The complaint said U Thein Nyunt’s parents have migrated to Myanmar from China. He was born in 1948 and his father passed away in 1952 without becoming a citizen of Myanmar.
A Maubin district election commission official U Kyaw Myint admitted to media that they could not verify
U Thein Nyunt’s family history due to insufficient time to conduct a thorough verification.
The Union Election Commission Chair U Tin Aye said his office will not interfere in the decision of district commission and accept the decision regarding U Thein Nyunt as final.
