Here is why -
A court in Myaungmya Township in Ayeyarwady Region has sentenced a Muslim preacher to one-year jail and two years on parole on 4 July after he was found guilty of committing an indecent act with a minor.
Maluvi Salim was found guilty under the section 509 of criminal procedure code by Inpin Station Court after he was put on trial on 16 June for committing indecent act with a 15 years old girl.
He was given additional 2 years rigorous imprisonment by Myan Aung Township court two days later in pending cases against him related to indecent acts and sexual harassment.
After the sentences were announced Facebook account with the name of Wirathu said “He (Maluvi Salim) has committed sexual abuses against a woman and sometimes with a group of women, some of whom are married, I can say about 10 women had become his victims. People so far have kept patience with him, as they were embarrassed even to talk about the crime he has committed. Now the people have wake up with the support of Ma Ba Tha and nationalists.
Maluvi Salim was arrested on 16 June after a case (P 47/2016) was registered against him at the Inpin Police Station under criminal procedure code section 294 and 509. He was accused of showing his private part to a 9th standard student. He had faced more charges in Myaung Mya court. He was held at the Hinthatda jail while facing the trials.
