This report is Confirmed false and is of Medium Priority. Here is why -
Crudia zeylanica or the Sri Lanka legume is an endemic plant. The IUCN Red List of 2006 and the National Red List of 2012 (prepared by the Ministry of Environment) had categorized it as "extinct". However, in late 2019 it was rediscovered, located within a privately owned property that sits square within the trace of the proposed Colombo-Kandy Expressway. Gampaha Division Wildlife Officer Devani Jayathilaka who voiced opposition against the removal of the said tree which obstructs the proposed Expressway construction faced gendered hate speech in early 2021. The current rumour claims that Devani Jayathilaka misled the public, and that the tree is found is abundance, and therefore it has been removed from the Red List. However, what has actually happened is that it has been removed from the "extinct" category, and added to the "endangered" category of the National Red List of 2020. On 7th September, the Ministry of Environment issued a press release clarifying this (Sinhala): https://tinyurl.com/4nzm6c8f.
