Muslims attacked after a monk’s call for destruction of mosques

An incident of violent attack against a minority Muslim community in Thuye Thamin village in Waw Township of Bago Region took place following a dispute over refurbishment of an Islamic school in the village. In the incident, which took place on 23 June, a mosque, an Islamic school and a Muslim cemetery were destroyed by 700 Buddhists mob. A group of villagers sent a complaint over the refurbishment of the religious school to the head of the Township Administration Depart on 6 June. They have posted the pictures of the school construction site on the social media, Facebook. The post had prompted a verbal argument between the owner of the building, who is a Muslim, and his Buddhist neighbor. The conflict widen after other villagers joined with the Buddhist side. Many Muslims had to flee the village after the mob attacked their homes. In the attack, a construction material shop owned by a Muslim was destroyed and U Rashid, who is the owner of the land on which the Islamic school is built, was attacked and sustained an injury on his head. He is currently placed under the police protection. The village has a total of 1500 households with the population of 7500 out of which 260 are Muslims belong to 50 households. In a series of posts on social media, anti-Muslim and extreme nationalists have incorrectly reported that the incident in Thuye Thamin village was triggered after a monk was attacked by a Muslim man. Their intention was to further fuel tension between the two communities. The Chief Minister of Bago Region has promised Muslims that he will try to handle effectively with the situation to prevent similar attacks in future. The incident in Thuye Thamin village occurred three weeks after a senior Monk made a comment that a true nationalist must have courage to destroy mosque if they are required to do so. Zwekabin monk Bandanta Widaszay made the comment at a conference held to mark the 3rd anniversary of founding of a monk led religious extremist group Ma Ba Tha- Burmese acronym for the Association of Race and Religion Protection.
