Here is why -
A group of staff from Kyaw Publishing house in Yangon were given one year jail term on charges of causing disrepute to the nation. The sentences were passed by the Pazundaung Township court late last year. U Myint Kyaw, a judge at the court passed the sentences.
U Aung Khin, who has ordered the calendar, is still escaping arrest. U Aung Khin, who is a member of Rohingya community, has been declared as fugitive by the police. The calendar include a sentence, which says Rohingya is an ethnic minority group of Myanmar. The sentence was written in three languages Burmese, English and Arabic.
The four staff of the publishing house were arrested last November and they were charged section 505 b of Penal Code. The owner of the publishing house U Kyaw was also put on trial together with his staff, but he was later acquitted.
Currently there are protest against Rohingyas. Such protest has intensified since 2012 following the rape and murder of a Rakhine woman Ma Thida Htwe.
Analyst think the attempt to publish a calendar related to Rohingya was a daring move. According to a Muslim lawyer, the nationalist sentiment is strongly influencing the judiciary of Myanmar.
