This report is Confirmed true and is of Medium Priority. Here is why -
The police filed case on rape of two Rohingya women in Maungtaw, only nearly three months after the complaints were made. The head of Border Guard Force, Police Colonel Thura San Lwin, said the head of the Kyar Khaung Taung village in Nga Khu Ra region, where the incident took place, is doing investigation into the allegation and reported to the police. He said the police is doing its own investigation and to file a lawsuit against alleged perpetrator under the section 376 of the Criminal Procedure Code against the accused. The two women told reporters on 4 April said they were beaten up and raped by two soldiers. However, Colonel Thura San Lwin said on 31 March said the complaint against the members of security forces on human rights abuse were fabricated. In security operation in the aftermath of the attack on Myanmar security forces in Northern Rakhine State on 9 October last year, 20 cases of alleged human rights, including the two cases of sexual abuse, were reported. Thura San Lwin also denied a report of burning of home and killings of Muslims in the same village. He said the accusers could not show the site of arson attack as well as burial place for the killed Muslims. He said they made false accusation, as they were promise for cash rewards by pro-Rohingya groups. A journalist, Fiona MacGregor, who worked for the Myanmar Times newspaper, has reported in an article published by the paper on 27 October that dozens of women were raped by the security forces in the aftermath of the attack. The accusation was denied by the spokesperson of the President Office U Zaw Htay. The authorities put pressure on the Myanmar Times to sack Ms MacGregor.
